political figures, educators,
realtors, chamber of commerce,
and the general public pick up
our book first before they make
a statement about public educa-
tion in Bexar County.”
Fellow Bexar County Coali-
tion member Sylvester Vasquez
Jr., a Southwest ISD trustee,
noted that the publication was
just one of the results of the col-
laboration among Bexar County
districts.
“The Bexar County Coali-
tion was formed some six
or seven years ago with the
thought of some 17 ISDs get-
ting to know each other and
sharing best practices—col-
laboration without consolida-
tion,” said Vasquez, TASB’s
2010-11 president. “Along the
way, some great things have
happened. We grew to 20 dis-
tricts, have agreed 100 percent
on our resolutions, and have
had a greater grassroots effort
on advocacy. But the greatest
thing to date is undoubtedly
this book. Many of us in Bexar
County have made contribu-
tions along the way, but no one
has committed as much time
and effort as our leader, Bobby
Blount, and for that I say,
‘gracias, amigo.’”

“Our book shows the influence and power that boards
of trustees can yield and have
when they collaborate with
each other,” said Blount. “We
have been surprised by the
gratitude expressed by the
public for us taking on this
challenge of producing the
real data. We also were very
fortunate to have the support of
many individuals and organizations across the state.”H
