medical field—one (an eighth-grader)
wants to be a neurosurgeon.
Harlingen CISD also shared its creative Step-Up program, which works with
student teachers from nearby University of Texas–Rio Grande Valley. School
staff works with the student teachers on
lesson planning, coaching, and delivering
One student teacher, Rafael Silva,
said, “I feel like a real teacher.” This program is one component of the district’s
recruiting program that ensures a ready
supply of capable and talented teachers.
‘Accept No Excuses’
The impression many of us got of our
visit to Harlingen CISD? The words cre-
ative, enthusiastic, visionary, innovative,
informative, and great come to mind. Not
to mention fun!
No wonder Harlingen has a strong
reputation and performs well on state
accountability ratings. It would be easy
to have lower expectations based on a
student population that is 77 percent
economically disadvantaged, but Superin-
tendent Cavazos maintains that “We will
accept no excuses.”
By the end of our visit, it was clear
that the many talented faculty, staff, and
students we met offer none and are work-
ing hard to achieve great things.H
